Years ago, Missy and I sat in the sunroom one afternoon just watching our goats up on the hill. She was snacking on carrots, when I teased her about her loud crunching. This observation apparently hurt her feelings. She said, “Well, everybody’s different.” Then she added a little song:
I crunch loud,
Daddy has a hairy chest,
And you wear a bra!"
Ahh! Yes, we were certainly a house of freaks. But her statement of “everybody’s different” was just a beautiful reminder that even though we may not look or behave the same as others, that’s really okay!
Pounding square pegs into round holes
In today’s world, ridiculing others in social media has become the norm. Every day we see or hear of people tearing down others, supposedly to build themselves up. What a sad commentary on humanity to feel the need to judge and criticize others. As a former middle school teacher, I constantly witnessed the teenage angst of trying to “fit in” juxtaposed with standing out as unique. How can one do both? Why try?
Just think how boring our world would be without those who are bold enough to live their authentic lives shamelessly. Of course, it is appropriate to conform to some social norms, but we should not be ashamed of those qualities that make us who we really are. We all deal with some level of insecurity, but when we learn to accept the differences in others, we can begin to acknowledge and love our own.
Celebrate our differences!
Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Why do we waste so much energy comparing ourselves to others?
